Archive Label: Evans photographed this family of Alabama sharecroppers in order to show the effects of the Depression on some of the most vulnerable members of American society. The bodies seen here are crucial markers of these farmers’ identity, for they derive their income from the physical efforts, and cannot be photographed without revealing to the camera signs of hard work, malnutrition, and inadequate medical care. Their poverty is in sharp contrast to the middle-class children in the tearsheet of photographs pinned to the wall behind them.
