Wang Yin was a professional artist who worked in a conservative style that looked to the masters of the past for inspiration. These artists painted landscape more frequently than any other subject and often included specific references to famous landscape paintings by earlier masters. They also frequently used classic poetry in the inscription on the paintings. Here, in the first (reading from right to left) twenty-eight characters, Wang Yiin has included a poem by the Song dynasty (960-1279) poet Su Dongpo.

The wild water is confused by the trace of flood tide
The sparse trees leaning to one side reveal their crystallized roots.
To where does this little boat return?
It must be to the village of Yellow Leaves in Jiangnan.

The last two lines of the inscription set the date and place in which the artist painted this landscape.
