Archive Label 2003: Portraits function not only to capture physical likeness but to embody less tangible personal traits as well. Dine is a prolific printmaker who has repeatedly attempted to portray his own character. Many of his self-portraits seem to characterize Dine as an artist, for they are prints of a printmaker by a printmaker. The richly printed surface of Harvard Self-portrait Without Glasses emphasizes Dine’s proficiency as an etcher.
