Exhibition Label: "Tradition and Modernity: Japanese Art of the Early Twentieth Century," Jan-2005, Hillary Pedersen Although schooled in nihonga (“Japanese style painting”), Itō primarily produced landscape prints. Depiction of landscape for its own sake, not simply as the background for human activity, became common with the introduction of Western artistic principles into Japan. This vertical composition emphasizes the monumentality of the snowy mountains, while the framing trees on either side brings the viewer into the center of the composition. Itō’s use of bright, almost surreal colors and billowy clouds and snowdrifts create a dreamlike effect.
