Exhibition Label: “Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle While Warhol was in the hospital recovering from being shot by Valerie Solanis in June 1968, he photographed himself in his hospital room. This is one of the photographs from that hospital stay. The bright light from the flash is visible, as is the camera that Warhol holds as he shoots the picture. To print these photos he used a commercial format by Royaltone that offered a second “bonus” picture. Two days after Warhol was shot, Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed, perhaps overshadowing attention paid to Warhol’s incident. Warhol’s health was permanently altered by the shooting.
