Archive Label: Warhol made this photograph of The Performance Group, an experimental-theater company, on assignment for Esquire, a men’s fashion and life-style magazine. The group is performing the play Dionysus in ‘69, a Greek myth updated for the 1960s. Rather than use professional processing for his film, Warhol chose the kind of low-price processing found at a corner drugstore. In this case, the processing provided two prints on a single sheet of paper. And rather than separate the prints, Warhol here (and in Esquire) kept them together, providing in the pairing a mark of the popular culture that so fascinated him.
