Archive Label: Bauret made this photograph as part of an advertising campaign in France for men’s briefs. When the campaign appeared in print, it was the first time one prominent French magazine had run an advertisement with a nude male model. The choice to show a male nude challenged the cultural assumptions that allowed and encouraged the objectification of women’s bodies while prohibiting the same of men’s bodies. This radical shift was in line with the social and cultural turmoil of the late 1960s.
