Archive Label date unknown: The foreign market for shin hanga declined during World War II. Perhaps for this reason or because of the rising importance of the Creative Print movement after the war, Shirō left the Watanabe circle. He began to carve and print his own designs, now emphasizing the expressive qualities of the woodblock rather than the technical refinement of shin hanga. This work is one of his creative prints. Its strength derives from the powerful black silhouettes of the three peasant women against a green haze of rice fields in the background.
