Archive Label 2003: A resident of Junction City, Kansas, Pennell captured turn-of-the-century life through studio portraits and photographs of local businesses and public events. This portrait of the photographer and his wife, like many of Pennell’s other portraits, is very formal. Both subjects sit frontally and look directly at the camera. Unlike the subjects of later portrait photographs, men and women at this time did not smile for the camera; photography was a solemn event. Exhibition Label: "The Family in Photography," Dec-1997, Stefanie Vigil From negatives in the Kansas Collection, Spencer Research Library.
