Joseph Judd Pennell, a commercial photographer working from the 1890s to his death in 1922, photographs the people, architecture, public events, ceremonies, and typical occupations found in this small Midwestern town and a neighboring army post at Fort Riley. Fifty prints made from the original negatives comprise a rich visual record of turn-of-the-century American life. Thomas Southhall, curator of photographs at the Spencer Museum of Art, organized the exhibition and wrote the catalogue. The exhibition was sponsored by the Mid-American Arts Alliance Project in conjunction with the University of Kansas Libraries.
