Archive Label: Six prostitutes are gathered in a semicircle around the woman who runs the brothel where they work. Pennell has photographed from above eye level (note the expanse and angle of the flooring), creating physical and psychological distance between himself and his subjects. These women are neither friends nor peers of the photographer; rather, they are specimens under examination. Robbed of subjectivity, they are reduced to their bodies, which mark their race, gender, and profession.
