Archive Label: Pennell presents naked male flesh, which after 1850 had become taboo in art aimed at a general public. Pennell’s intention, however, to show the birds tattooed on Reynolds’ chest, required that it be bare. The tattoo is the primary subject of the photograph, to which Reynolds’s bare flesh is only incidental.
