Archive Label 2003: Owens, a photojournalist, published the book Suburbia in 1973, which was critical of suburban culture. In this photograph he shows how the overabundance of material objects crowd the traditional symbols of spirituality, suggesting that the quest for possessions often overshadows all else. Exhibition Label: "The Family in Photography," Dec-1997, Stefanie Vigil In the 1960s and 1970s many photographers recorded changing family life. By looking at the increasing importance the family placed on material possessions, Bill Owens questioned the priorities and values of consumer society.
