Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson This picture of a Gothic cathedral interior was published in the first year of Alfred Stieglitz’s photography journal Camera Work. It is one of the few photographs of a religious subject that appeared in the journal’s fourteen-year run. This aesthetic study plays with dramatic effects of light cast against the ornate architecture and white-marble effigy. The bath of light evokes a sense of quietude and spiritual contemplation appropriate for this environment.
