Teaching Gallery Label: “Changing the World: Images of Revolution,” Feb-2009, Kate Meyer François "Papa Doc" Duvalier became president of Haiti in 1957. The Duvalier government is characterized by its tyranny, rather than the democracy celebrated in the banner shown in this photograph. The protest Smith documents was unsuccessful in easing Papa Doc’s control over Haiti as he continued to rule until his death in 1971 and was then succeeded by his son.
