Exhibition Label: "Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Sherman Stylistic similarities to this image can be found in the wave studies in volumes V and VII (1815 and 1817) of Hokusai’s famous Manga albums. And certainly the Japanese artist’s Great Wave off Kanagawa (also included in this exhibition) may have provided visual inspiration for the French printmaker. The seascape’s indistinguishable horizon line and simplified forms of unmodulated, outlined color demonstrate a keen appreciation for Japanese graphic style. The artist’s red monogram in the upper right corner, echoing Asian seals, provides the finishing touch of Japonisme to the composition.
