Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson Witkin’s reinterpretation of the iconic crucifixion scene is based on a complicated tableau he built. He defies the familiarity of this New Testament scene by using disfigured models and then piercing through the negative to mar its otherwise finished quality. This picture questions the notions of decency and reverence in which Christian subjects are normally regarded.
