Archive Label 2003:
Unlike other portraits of artists, Friedlander’s photograph of Jim Dine does not present the artist with the tools of his trade. Rather than associating Dine with his art, Friedlander shows Dine outside the studio. This photograph emphasizes the human aspects of the artist. Dine and Friedlander were friends as well as artistic collaborators; they exchanged drawings and photographs inspired by each other’s work.
