Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson Abbott’s photograph is of a quintessential block in Harlem, comprising a church among many typical businesses, such as a barbershop and a grocery market. This combination of buildings suggests a community’s dependence on both sacred and secular realms. Abbott photographed this location on multiple occasions in the 1930s for the Federal Art Project in order to record the effect of the Great Depression on daily life in New York City.
