Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson Shahn, one of the foremost social realists of the twentieth century, made this photograph for the Works Progress Administration. His compassion for victims of social and political injustice spurred him to sympathize with Americans suffering during the Depression. The young girl in this photograph is in a rustic domestic space with a print of the Virgin and Child adorning the paneled wall behind her. The picture tells of the nurturing presence that religion may give her everyday life.
