"Bobbin' and Weavin'," May-2005, Debra Thimmesch
Lynn Basa’s rugs and tapestries often resemble paintings, a likeness that is deliberate on the part of the artist. In this small-scale weaving, a slice of white bread rests in the center of a sunflower, which is superimposed over an American flag while a white picket fence runs along the lower portion of the composition. The work was conceived at the height of the NEA censorship battle of the late-1980s. Of this politically-charged piece, Basa remarked, “I was musing on what acceptable art should look like to deserve funding in the opinion of conservatives.”
