Archive Label 2003: Senju, on the upper reaches of the Sumida River outside Edo (Tokyo), was a post station on the Oshu Kaido, one of five official highways controlled by the Tokugawa government and the sole link between Edo and the relatively undeveloped northeast. Here a traveller and his packhorse look out across rice paddies to Mt. Fuji, white against the evening sky, as they near the end of their lonely journey from the northeast.
