Archive Label: Cranes and pine trees are long-standing symbols of longevity in East Asia. Paintings such as this one are frequently presented to elderly people on their birthdays. A graduate of Shanghai Art Institute, Yang specialized in bird and flower subjects. Here he has defined the birds and pine with the bold, powerful strokes that are the hallmark of his style. Bright washes of color provide a welcome contrast to the rough, dry brushstroke, and the touches of red color on the birds’ heads add further accent.
