Brosseau Center for Learning: In Conversation with the 2025–26 KU Common Book

I have an intense visceral response to the smell of a freshly opened box of crayons. It’s a very unique scent that instantly brings back memories of youthful drawing, coloring, and art making. To many people of my generation, crayons are one of the first things held in tiny hands, scrawling bright colors across a piece of paper. A tiny masterpiece that is proudly displayed on the most important gallery wall in the world, the front of the refrigerator. Each color is an exploration of the world. The larger the box, the more expansive that single piece of paper could become. Cerulean seas, fields of lavender, bright yellows and oranges of the sun. With crayons, we first learn to truly look at and appreciate the world in which we live.

Scott Barber gives a freshly opened box of crayons five stars.
