Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard The theme of the seven deadly sins has been a staple in the graphic arts ever since Pieter Bruegel the Elder treated the theme in a series of engravings around 1560. Although best known as an author, William S. Burroughs was profoundly involved with the relationship between image and text, often in collaboration with other artists, such as Brion Gysin and Keith Haring. The woodblock component of these prints was printed from blocks shot by the artist with a 12-gauge shotgun in February 1991. The screenprint component was composed later that year and the text was written by the artist between February and July of 1991.
