Exhibition Label: "Tradition and Modernity: Japanese Art of the Early Twentieth Century," Jan-2005, Hillary Pedersen The well-known Tokyo publishing house of Hasegawa and Nishinomiya compiled a series of twenty-one shin hanga (“new prints”) by several different artists that depicted night scenes. Most of these images were printed using primarily black and blue inks, with an eye-catching accent of glowing light cast from a lantern or cottage window. In this print, the low vantage point of the viewer puts the bridge high into the nighttime sky, virtually scraping the top of the dramatic composition. The glass-like water below reflects the lights from the shore and the boatman’s lantern.
