Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson Salviati recorded many of the medieval historical sites in Venice in photographs that were later sold as souvenirs and published in travel journals. The processes he used enabled him to make his pictures cheaper and more widely available to consumers than earlier processes had been. Exhibition Label: "Venice Observed," Dec-1980, Elizabeth Broun and Yolanda de Estrada The conservation of Venice as well as the city's cultural ties with the East resulted in the eclectic yet magnificant structure of St. Mark, which was erected as a palatine chapel. Romanesque porticos mingle with Byzantine domes and Gothic arches; sculptures in porphyry, marble, and bronze from ancient Rome and carvings from the late Middle Ages adorn its surfaces.
