Exhibition Label: "Signs of Faith: Photographs from the Collection," Oct-2001, Elissa L.Anderson Earl Iversen, an associate professor of basic studies and photography at the University of Kansas, explores in this picture the sense of piety found in much of folk art. After being miraculously healed in 1912 at the Grotto of Our Lady in Lourdes, France, Father Philip Wagner built this shrine to the Virgin Mary in the early 1920s adjacent to the church in Rudolph, Wisconsin. This secluded alcove is one of nearly forty components of this expansive grotto in the rural Randolph community.
