Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard Many of Roger Shimomura’s prints have been conceived as series, perhaps as a rethinking of the comic books that he collects and traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts. Shimomura’s print series number up to 25 sheets. In this instance he has grouped five scenes in a single vertical print. The mix of styles and subjects is central to Shimomura’s primary concern: the inability of much of the U.S. population to discern the difference between Japanese and Japanese-American individuals and their cultures.
