Archive Label 2003: Each year the Peter Norton Family commissions an art edition to celebrate Christmas. For Christmas 1999, Vik Muniz created a ceramic plate that features his recreation of Caravaggio’s Medusa (1590, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence). The Brazil-born artist describes himself as an alchemist who makes visual magic out of the mundane. According to Muniz, he aims to create an illusion that fools the eye of the viewer and calls attention to the fallacies of visual information.
