Exhibition Label: “Textures of Interpretation: Meaning and Materiality in Global Contemporary Art," Jan-2010, Sooa Im The 12-sheet series Banshee Pearls is composed of photographs and photocopies, often layered over one another with added drawing. For these prints, the artist Kiki Smith photocopied and photographed her body parts at different angles. Then, she transferred these fragmented images to a lithography plate using both negative and positive registers. The pearlescent hues of the Torinoko paper Smith used for this series impart a subtle sculptural dimension to these printed images of her body. Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard The twelve sheets of Banshee Pearls were composed from photographs and photocopies of Smith’s head, often layered over one another with added drawing. The cumulative effect is one of vibrant internal resonance in which reflections and echoes of a face harmonize beautifully and mysteriously with one another and with other forms. The prints, which may be installed in any order, invite the viewer’s own self-analysis.
