Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard Kirchhefer is one of two artists in this exhibition to treat the theme of the seven deadly sins, which, Kirchhefer has noted, are much more interesting than “the seven cardinal virtues.” A self-portrait appears in Pride, in which the artist shows his facility in a number of intaglio printmaking techniques, such as mezzotint and aquatint. Archive Label 2003 (version 1.1): Dan Kirchhefer received his M.F.A. from the University of Kansas in 1985. He is now associate professor of drawing, printmaking, and art history at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas. Archive Label 2003 (version 2): Dan Kirchhefer has often acknowledged the virtuosity of earlier artists by incorporating elements of their works into his own beautifully crafted prints. Here Melencolia appears with the dog from Saint Jerome in His Study next to a paraphrase of James Ensor’s listless couple who doze late into the day.
