A Wry Eye: Witty, Sardonic and Ironic Work by Contemporary Printmakers

Kirchhefer’s dazzling skill as a draftsman and printmaker and his deep knowledge of art history join forces in many of his droll compositions. In Pride, he shows off his skill in several techniques, including line etching, aquatint, and mezzotint. Art historical references include a visual quotation of Courbet’s painting Bonjour Monsieur Courbet (1854).

Kirchhefer is one of two artists in this exhibition to treat the theme of the seven deadly sins, which, Kirchhefer has noted, are much more interesting than “the seven cardinal virtues.” A self-portrait appears in Pride, in which the artist shows his facility in a number of intaglio printmaking techniques, such as mezzotint and aquatint.

Archive Label 2003 (version 1.1):
Dan Kirchhefer received his M.F.A. from the University of Kansas in 1985. He is now associate professor of drawing, printmaking, and art history at Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas.
