The lattice work effect, seen in the background of this paperweight, is characteristic of glass commonly called “Lutz-type,” in reference to Nicholas J. Lutz. Born in France, Lutz popularized several European decorative techniques in the United States. As the son of a glass blower, he learned to use threads of glass to create a “striped” pattern known in Europe as the latticino technique. Lutz was not the only craftsman to introduce such artistry, but his connection with the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and other prominent glass houses probably explains the association of his name with this technique.
