Civic Leader and Art Collector: Sallie Casey Thayer and an Art Museum for KU

La Farge was among the earliest American artists to develop an interest in Japanese prints, which he began collecting in 1856, and which influenced his compositions and color palettes. Sallie Casey Thayer, who accumulated more than 1,000 Japanese prints, shared this passion, and she owned an auction catalog of works from La Farge’s print collection that were sold in 1908. Perhaps it was La Farge’s elegant blend of various styles that prompted Thayer to purchase Hope and two studies of St. Anthony from New York’s Macbeth Gallery in the spring of 1913.
