Archive Label 2003: Though woodblock prints were most often inexpensively produced for popular consumption, surimono were made in small numbers, of expensive, high quality material for the enjoyment of a select few. Surimono are privately published prints that were done for performances, business openings, or other events. They were most often distrubuted around New Year’s. Very lavishly made, such prints often make use of exotic materials like metal and mica, and special pigments. This print has metal applied for the sword blades and in some details of the armor.
