Although colored glass was generally manufactured in large quantities, only small amounts were required for decorative details. For this reason, it was often necessary to store excess colored glass at the end of the working day. Surplus glass was formed into balls that could be reheated and used as needed. This convenient storage method allowed a variety of hues to be available at all times, thus providing color experts, like those at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, with a rainbow of glass with which to experiment.
