This figure represented a family ancestor. The elaborate body scarification identifies her as a woman who completed different types of initiation, distinguishing her as a mature and fulfilled woman.
Artists are allowed great freedom of expression with ancestor figures because human qualities, scarification, hairstyle, and anatomical detail are appropriate parts of the representation.
