Exhibition Label: "Chokwe Art from the Claude D. Brown Collection," Feb-2000 Representations of pigs on combs refer to the pig masquerade character. This masked dancer entertained the audience by imitating the behavior of pigs, performing on all fours, poking around with its snout, and moving about clumsily. These anti-social behaviors are contrasted with the socially acceptable behavior of other masks. Such contrasts help teach wrong from right.
