Exhibition Label:
"Chokwe Art from the Claude D. Brown Collection," Feb-2000
Chokwe artists commonly decorated whistles with the head of a chief or a mask. They interpreted the sound of the whistle as the voice of the ancestors. Whistles became a part of the royal insignia, creating a link between the ancestors and the chief.
