Exhibition Label:
"Chokwe Art from the Claude D. Brown Collection," Feb-2000
The chief carried a knife and scabbard like this one as part of the royal insignia. The copper wire decoration on the pommel is arranged like a crown. When appearing before his assembled subjects, the chief touches the ground with the point of his knife to show he is in a peaceful mood. Failure to do this leaves reason to fear his disposition.
