A series of wars between the colonizing British South Africa Company and the native populations of South Africa erupted in the late 19th century. Each of these medals portrays symbols of the British Empire, including flowers, thistle, clovers, and the profile of Queen Victoria. On the reverse side, both medals depict a lion being attacked with spears, which represents the loss that British settlers experienced.
