Archive Label 2003: Incised lines made with a vertically held tool were used to create the floral pattern around the rim, while diagonal cuts, resulting in a sloping edge, were used to create the "diamond trellis" pattern in the center. Large dishes such as this were exported to the Islamic Middle East where they were well suited to the Muslim custom of communal dining.
