The Union of South Africa in 1910 unified four previously separate British colonies and was still a dominion of the British Empire. This medallion commemorates the Union with the imagery of a human figure with wings, mid-stride in front of a setting sun. On the reverse side, a shield, a heraldic lion, a tree, and two leaping animals represent the four colonies.
