Exhibition Label: "Machine in a Void: World War I & the Graphic Arts," Mar-2010, Steve Goddard Van Dooren's Improvisation heralds the modern metropolis with its aerial motor-routes and pulsing rhythms. Van Dooren participated in the activities of the leading avant-garde groups in post-war Antwerp: Moderne Kunst (Modern Art), Het Overzicht (The Overview), and Ça Ira! (That'll do!-an idiomatic phrase with the sense of "there is hope"). This is one of eight linocuts by van Dooren that was issued in a portfolio published by Het Overzicht, with an introduction by the radically aligned poet and critic Victor J. Brunclair.
