Exhibition Label: "NetWorks: Art and Artists from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection," Mar-2011, Susan Earle, Stephen Goddard, and SMA Interns Loren Calaway’s technically virtuosic yet practically frustrating sculptures play thoughtfully with the concepts of functionality and familiarity. Calaway studied sculpture at California State University at Fresno, and was influenced by the performance and installation artwork that was created by Terry Allen, who taught there in the 1970s. Calaway’s meticulously crafted wooden objects and their preparatory drawings recall fine furnishings. Their level of polish and profusion of storage compartments and drawers lends them a feeling of authority, but their scale renders them too small for human use. The artist states, “There are some things that move from one notion to the other. At no time will they sit comfortably in either notion or both, nor will they conform in any respect to any other notion.”
