Exhibition Label: "NetWorks: Art and Artists from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection," Mar-2011, Susan Earle, Stephen Goddard, and SMA Interns Steve Keister’s work from the mid-1990s displays the artist’s engagement with ancient Mesoamerican culture. The artist has stated, “I first visited Mexico in 1979, and have returned with increasing frequency since then, resulting in an enduring fascination with the manifestations of pre-Colombian civilization. I have a predilection for geometric order embodied in tactile form.” Keister sees a formal resonance between the angular forms in these drawings and bas-reliefs on Pre-Columbian monuments.
