The Object Speaks

Kondō was born to a renowned family of potters who produced blue-and-white porcelain. His grandfather, Kondō Yuzo (1902–1985), was designated as a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government. Kondō honors his familial traditions while also engaging the contemporary world through his experiments in sculptural, rather than functional, ceramic forms, and his development of new glazes. His gintekisai (silver-mist) glaze incorporates precious metals and can be seen in the delicate, glittering surface of The Milky Way. The glaze evokes watery mist or dew as well as the stars in the galaxy.

Archive Label 2003:
Kondo Takahiro was born to a renowned family of potters who produce very high quality blue-and-white porcelain. His grandfather, Kondo Yuzo, was a Living National Treasure. Since entering the family business, Kondo has transformed the tradition in brilliant way, developing his own glazes and moving from functional to sculptural forms. The strong and serene form of Ginga'01 is enlivened by the textured 'silver-mist' glaze that appears as tiny beads of mist on the surface.

At their annual meeting on April 20, 2002, the Friends of the Art Museum voted to purchase Ginga'01 for the Spencer Museum.
