This quilt portrays Maria Rodgers Martin, an enslaved woman who lived in both Missouri and Kansas in the 19th century. While still in Missouri, she created at least two highly skilled quilts in traditional patterns. One of those patterns is replicated here to surround the portrait in this quilt made by Marla Jackson. Two quilts made by Martin in the 1840s or 1850s are also on view in this exhibition.
