Archive Label 2003: Léon Brard left a career as a painter in Paris at the age of 29 to study the making of ceramics with Charles-Jean Avisseau in Tours, France. Avisseau was a key participant in the late-19th-century revival of Palissy ware, an example of which is also displayed in this gallery. Bernard Palissy was a naturalist and keen observer of nature. He studied ponds and their inhabitants and carefully recreated them in ceramic form. Avisseau in turn recreated the Palissy style. Brard, however, departed from this slavish copying of Palissy and created unique trompe l’oeil pieces of fish or food on white faience ware with a blue border. This platter of fish and eels is a masterful presentation of the Brard style.
